The condition of dry eye is due to the lack of tear production. The person with this condition complains of foreign body sensation (feel like sand in the eyes). It is recommended not rub your eyes or use any medication until they have the recommendations of an ophthalmologist. Excessive tearing can be an extremely annoying and potentially dangerous condition since in many cases may be due to irritation, inflammation or infection. Tearing may also be due to problems in the tear ducts.
